1967 Chevrolet Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Chevrolet Full Size Car

The 1967 model was redesigned with enhanced Coke bottle styling that featured front and rear fender bulges. The car appeared larger and more upscale and Chevrolet brochures showed “luxury models” as a designation for Impala 4-doors and all Caprice 2- and 54-doors. The L72 427 HP 427 CID V-8 engine was not available in 1967, leaving only one 427 big block, the 385 HP L36 Turbo-Jet V-8 as optional, along with the 325 HP 396 and the 327 275 HP. The entry level power plants were still the 155 HP I-6 and the 195 HP 283 CID V-8. A dual-master brake cylinder was now standard, while front disc brakes were optional. The three-speed Turbo Hydramatic transmission – previously only available with the 396 and 427 CID V-8s was now optional with the 275 HP 327 CID Turbo Fire V-8.

The Caprice model line was unchanged, the Impala model line continued as before as did the Bel Air and Biscayne models. Big news was that the Impala Super Sport returned as a separate line. This year the Bel Air featured triple taillights unlike Biscayne’s dual units. The 1967 Caprice now had revised grilles and taillights, and optional front fender lamps which illuminated with the headlamps, as well as a revised instrument panel with round instruments, and the steering wheel was new.

The “100 millionth GM car” was a light blue metallic 1967 Caprice coupe assembled on April 21, 1967, at the Janesville, Wisconsin plant. New safety features were built into full size Chevrolets, including a fully collapsible energy-absorbing steering column, side marker lights, and shoulder belts for closed models.

In a strange move, the L-72 425 HP 427 CID V-8 was removed from the full size car options list. It was only available in the Corvette.

The SS 427 was announced as as special SS Model. This was part of Chevrolet’s SS Marketing strategy where each line had a “top dog” SS model, for example: SS 396 Chevelle, SS 350 Camaro, and even a Nova SS 327. Of course the SS 427 was the top of top dogs with 385 HP, special suspension and a unique hood. See the 1967 SS Brochure, HERE.

In a strange decision, the 425 HP 427 CID V-8 was removed from the engine options in the full size car line.

The Biscayne was still the base model line. The Biscayne had an anodized aluminum grille with the bumper carrying the parking/turn signal lamps below. Grille opening moldings were used, as were stainless windshield and rear window reveal moldings. “Biscayne” in script appeared on the rear fenders, while “Chevrolet” in script was placed on the deck lid and hood. Small bright metal hub caps were standard and a chrome outside rear view mirror was included. The Ventipane frames were plated. Dual taillamps as a unit were at the rear featuring built-in backup lights. Station wagons had tailgate stainless moldings and Model script on the tailgate. Interiors were cloth and vinyl, or all-vinyl on station wagons.

Standard features included a brake system warning light, cigarette lighter, illuminated heater control panel, padded instrument panel, glove compartment lock, front door arm rests, rear arm rests with built-in ash trays, foam-cushioned front seat with seat back release latches on two-door models, and color-keyed floor carpeting.

Biscaynes were available as a 2-door sedan, 4 -door sedan and a 6-passenger station wagon.

The Bel Air line had a narrow full-length body side molding, roof drip cap moldings, triple unit tail-lamps with center unit backup lights, lower deck lid or tailgate moldings and “Bel Air” in script on the rear fenders. Interiors were refined over the Biscayne. Stand equipment added to that found on the Biscayne models, included a glove compartment light, illuminated ignition switch, and the following station wagon features: a foam-cushioned third seat, color-keyed textured vinyl cargo area sidewalls, except in 6-passenger wagons, and in 9-passenger units – a third seat courtesy light.

Bel Air series models were were 2-door sedan, 4-door sedan, and 6- and 9-passenger station wagons.

The Impala exteriors were distinguished by bright lower body side moldings, roof drip cap and reveal moldings on hardtops, bright side window accents on station wagons and sedans, deck lid center panel accents in silver, and with a Chevrolet center emblem on the rear cove, black accented-tail lamp surrounds and lower tailgate reveal molding on the station wagon. Full wheel covers were included. Interiors were cloth and vinyl, or all-vinyl, depending on the model.

The following features were added to or replaced the equipment found on lower-priced lines: a brushed metal, bright-outlined lower instrument panel facing, an electric clock, finger-tip door releases, foam-cushioned rear seat, bright seat end panels, bright garnished moldings on hardtops, bright foot pedal trim outlines when equipped with with power brakes, C-panel side lights, courtesy lamps under instrument panel on two-door hardtop and convertible, and the convertible had a power-operated top.

Impala series models included 4-door sedan, 2- and 4-door hardtop, convertible and 6- and 9-passenger station wagons.

The Super Sport Impala featured an all-vinyl interior, with front Strato-bucket seats and a division console housing the shift lever as standard equipment. The Strato-bench seating was a no charge substitution. Exterior identification included black accents on the grille with bright horizontal bars, front and rear wheelhouse moldings, black-accented body sill and lower rear fender bright metal moldings, a black-accent deck lid latch panel, “SS” deck lid and grille badges and Impala SS specific full wheel covers. Standard equipment mirrored the Impala.

The Super Sport was still available as a 2-door hardtop (sport Coupe) and convertible.

NOTE: This would be the last year that the Super Sport would be a separate model.

The Caprice included these exterior features on the Custom Sedan and Custom Coupe: front fender lights, front and rear wheelhouse moldings, bright metal lower body side moldings with rear quarter extensions, color-keyed body side stripes, belt reveal molding on the Custom Coupe, black-accented deck lid panel with bright highlight trim, triple-unit taillights with backup lights in the rear bumper, “Caprice” in script on the deck lid, C-panel “Caprice” nameplates, and Caprice-specific full wheel covers.

Interiors were plush and being trimmed in cloth, or cloth and vinyl or all-vinyl, depending on model. Caprice Custom station wagons had wood side panels with bright outline moldings on the body sides and tailgate, plus “Caprice” tailgate nameplates. Interior features, in addition to or replacing those found on lower-priced models included: walnut-look lower instrument panel facing with bright outline, pattern cloth and vinyl door panels, faux-wood door panel trim in sedans and coupes whereas wagons were all-vinyl, and front seat fold-down center arm rest on sedans.

The series featured a 2- door hardtop (with special roof line) a 4- door hardtop, and 6- and 9-passenger station wagons.
