1968 Barracuda – New Engines
The “Barracuda” script was moved to the cowl side front fender region, now above engine or model logos. The 273 CID V-8 was no more, with the base engine the 318 CID V-8. Significant was the all-new 340 CID performance V-8. Thus, the 340 Formula S replaced the 273 CID Formula S. The new 383 Formula S V-8 now boasted 300 HP.

1968 Plymouth Barracuda Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1968 Plymouth Barracuda
The big news for Barracuda this year was the release of four engine options. Buyers could now have the 225 CID I-6, a 318, 340 or 383 CID V-8 under the hood. The 340 CID V-8 was a Barracuda exclusive, while the 383 was upgraded with the parts assigned to the mid-size Road Runner. The 273 CID V-8 was retired from the Barracuda line and replaced with the redesigned 318 CID V-8. Barracuda standard powerplants were either the 225 CID Six or 318 CIDV-8 along with a three-speed manual transmission.
Hemi Barracudas
Chrysler made fifty fastback Barracudas equipped with the 426 CID Hemi for Super Stock drag racing. These cars were assembled by Hurst Performance and featured items such as lightweight side glass, fiberglass front fenders, hood scoop, lightweight seats, no sound deadener, and even the rear seats omitted. A sticker indicated that the car was not for use on public roads. It was a beast – it could run the quarter-mile in the mid-ten second range.
Savage GT
AutoCraft, a private contractor developed a super-high performance version of the Barracuda, called the Savage GT, with either 340 or 383 CID power. The car had revised suspension for sport car competition, and the engines received additional tweaks for more power. The Savage GT was built in Wisconsin. It had special wheels, side pipe exhaust, a fiberglass trunk lid with molded spoiler, a modified grille, and a roll bar. The tail panel and grille had “Savage” badges. In 1969, it was available with modified 340, 383, and 440 CID V-8s. Few were sold in 1968 and after a short run in 1969, the company closed shop.

The 383 CID V-8 was rated at 300 HP @ 4,200 RPM and 400-lb.ft. of torque @ 2,400 RPM. The “906” heads were sourced from the 440 CID V-8. They had 2.08-inch intake & 1.74-inch exhaust valves with a compression ratio of 10.0:1. The camshaft had 256/260 degrees duration & 0.425/0.435-inch lift. A Carter AVS carburetor was mounted on a dual-plane, cast-iron intake, and a dual-breaker ignition was fitted. Specific exhaust manifolds were designed to fit the B-engine into the A-body and unfortunately, were more restrictive.

The new 340 CID V-8 was a true performance engine and was based on the LA-series small-block. The engine made 275 HP @ 5,000 RPM and 340 lb. ft. of torque @ 3,200 RPM. The heads had larger ports & 2.02/1.60″ valves, with a compression ratio of 10.5:1. Automatic transmission Barracudas had a camshaft with 268/276 degrees duration and 0.429/0.444-inch lift. The 4-speed transmission cars had a camshaft with 276/284 degrees duration and 0.444/0.453-inch lift.
