1967 Barracuda – New Bodies & New Engines!

The new Barracuda featured all new and slick styling plus three body styles: Hardtop Coupe, Fastback, and Convertible! The new body style was very up-to-date with what would be a hallmark of the late 60’s – the “Coke bottle” soft curves to the body sides. A new engine, the 383 CID V-8 was now available in the Formula S.

1967 Plymouth Barracuda Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Plymouth Barracuda

For 1966 the Barracuda shed its link to the Valiant completely, it was now a separate line. This second-generation Barracuda was redesigned with model-specific sheet metal yet still shared many components with the Valiant line. It was available as a convertible, a notchback coupe, and a redesigned fastback design.

The new Barracuda was chiefly the work of John E. Herlitz and John Samsen. Unlike the slab-sided original, it now had “Coke-bottle” side contours and totally revised front and rear fascias. Other design changes included wider wheel openings, curved side glass, and new, S-curved roof pillars on the hardtop. The roof line on the fastback coupe was more streamlined, more steeply raked, mush closer to the 2+2 Mustang, and with a much smaller flush rear window in place of the distinctive wraparound one in the original 1964-66 model. Significantly, the use of chrome trim was much more restrained.

Also new was the addition of an all new engine for the line, but not new to Plymouth, the 383 CID “B” block, a performance workhorse ever since its introduction in the brand in 1959. With a 10:1 compression ratio and the same cylinder heads and camshaft as the Belvedere version, it was only rated at 280 HP @ 4200 RPM, supposedly because of a more restrictive exhaust system, but most feel that this was just a ploy on the part of Plymouth. Regardless, this was a vast straight-line performance improvement over the much smaller 273 CID 235 HP V-8. The 383 CID V-8 was only available with the Formula S package, had disc brakes as mandatory, and was not fitted with power steering due to engine compartment size.

The 383 CID “B” big-block, rated at 280 HP was now available. However, one had to order the Formula S package to receive it. Another issue was that it was not available with power steering. Disc brakes were mandatory and only the Torqueflite and 4-speed were fitted.  The engine specifications can be found in the 1967 Plymouth Barracuda AMA Specifications Sheets, HERE.

For some strange reason, the 383 CID V-8 was the only V-8 to receive the dual exhaust system, with the 273 CID 4-barrel Commando V-8 relegated to a single exhaust system.

The 1967 Plymouth Barracuda convertible was now part of the second generation Barracuda, which featured a redesigned body but surprisingly still shared many components with the Valiant. Only 4,228 convertibles were produced this year.

Standard equipment on these cars included three-speed manual transmission, carpeting, full instrumentation, grille mounted Rallye lights, heater and defroster, left-hand outside rear view mirror, padded dash, all standard safety equipment, and either the 225 CID I-6 or 273 CID V-8.

Fastback Coupe – The fastback was called the “Sports Barracuda”. Standard equipment included three-speed manual transmission, carpeting, full instrumentation, grille mounted Rallye lights, heater and defroster, left-hand outside rearview mirror, padded dash, rear fold-down seat, all standard safety equipment, and either the 225 CID I-6 or 273 CID V-8.

Convertible –  Standard equipment included three-speed manual transmission, carpeting, full instrumentation, grille mounted Rallye lights, heater and defroster, left-hand outside rear view mirror, padded dash, front bucket seats, all standard safety equipment, power top, glass rear window,  and either the 225 CID I-6 or 273 CID V-8.

Formula S –  While not a separate model, the Formula S would be considered the “performance and handling” package and was marketed as a model. The “Formula S” package included the Commando V8 engine, heavy duty suspension upgrades, Wide Oval D70 x 14 tires, special emblems, and a 150 MPH Speedometer. The 383 CID V-8 was only available in the Formula S. When the 383 CID was ordered, disc brakes were mandatory and the three-speed manual transmission was not available.
