1967: Refinement, Not Change –
the GTX Appears

Aside from some minor trim changes, the mid-sized Plymouth echoed the look of 1966. The mid-size Belvedere line and its derivative models were slightly face lifted.  But the big news was that the new GTX arrived with the 440 CID Commando V-8 as standard! This GTX was added to the model lineup with only the 440 CID or 426 Hemi V-8 powerplants as engine choices.

1967 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1967 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars

The medium-sized Belvedere and its derivative models were slightly facelifted. The horizontal grille blades were thinner and housed dual, side-by-side headlights with small grille extensions between them. The parking lamps were moved into the bumper. The taillamps were redone. All mid-sized Plymouths were identical except for exterior trim and grille changes.

The base line continued to be split by Belvedere, Belvedere I, and II. These models looked very similar but had interior trim and standard features increasing in content and style up to the Belvedere II. The next in line was the Satellite. This was the “sport” model and came standard with bucket seats, though an upscale bench seat could be specified. All Satellites were V-8 equipped. A new economy model was a very plain station wagon, simply called a Belvedere. It was intended to replace the compact Valiant station wagons in price.

The GTX was the latest and last level of the mid-size line. It was new and it was designed and marketed as a pure performance model, constructed to compete with GM and Ford muscle cars. Its powerplant selections outshone the competition with a 440 CID V-8 and with the famous 426 Hemi as optional.

Engine Choices Increased
The 1967 version of the base two-barrel 383 CID V-8 had a longer-duration camshaft and smaller carburetor bores , now at 1.25″.  The 440 CID V-8 had a hotter camshaft, a larger 4-barrel carburetor, better. lower-restriction exhaust manifolds, and the  heads were fitted with bigger valves.  Dual exhaust was standard, along with a dual snorkel air cleaner.  A new “LA” based 318 CID V-8 was introduced. It derived from the 273 CID V-8, using the “thin wall” casting process. It now had wedge combustion chambers, abandoning the “Polyspherical” chambers introduced back in 1954. Also new were hydraulic tappets. Horsepower was the same as in the old A-series 318 at 230.

The GTX was based on the Belvedere, and was differentiated by a blacked out grille, special rear fascia, fiberglass simulated hood scoops (with optional racing stripes), a chrome “pop-open” fuel filler cap, and a tachometer mounted on the center console. Standard was Plymouth’s 440 CID V-8, the “Super Commando 440”. It was rated at 375 HP. Optional was the 425 HP 426 CID Hemi. Heavy duty suspension was standard.

While still at 318 CID and with similar architecture, the new LA 318 CID V-8 sported lightweight engine casting construction, wedge shaped combustion chambers rather than the “Polyspherical” design, and hydraulic lifters. HP rating did not change.
