The 1968 Chevrolet trucks had a modestly revamped body from the 1967 model, with slightly more bright work, but were otherwise unchanged.
1968 – Continuing the Trend
Chevrolet made little changes to the 1968 body from what was introduced in 1967, but introduced two new V-8s, a 307 CID that replaced the 283 CID, and a powerful 396 CID big block.

General Year Information – 1968 Chevrolet Pickup & Suburban
Safety side marker lamps were added to the front fenders of Pickups, Panels and Suburbans. A modestly revamped body had slightly more bright work. Badges on the side of the cowl carried C1O designations for 1/2-ton models. The C10 (and K10 four-wheel drive) Chassis models and Pickups came on 115- or 127-in. wheelbases. The Chassis, Cowl & Windshield version was dropped.
This was the 50th anniversary of Chevrolet trucks and a special Anniversary gold and Off-white two-tone paint option was available for $49.50 on Fleetside Pickups and $31.25 on Step-Sides.The CST and Custom trim models were continued, with the CST sporting a deluxe interior, dash, and bucket seats and chrome bumpers and additional brightwork. The Custom Appearance option mimicked the CST’s exterior look, and the Custom Comfort Option upgraded the interior but excluded bucket seats.
Panels and Suburbans came only on the longer wheelbase. The Suburban again had two-doors on the passenger side and one on the driver’s side. As before, Suburban models were available with a tailgate or Panel truck style double rear doors.
Pickups on the shorter wheelbase had a 6-1/2-ft. cargo box. Those on the long wheelbase featured an 8-ft. box. Both sizes came in Step-Side or Fleetside models.
The standard “pie plate” hubcaps had a wide color stripe and a Chevrolet bow tie in the center. Custom wheel covers had a “gear sprocket” look with color-keyed finish and a bow tie in the center.

Chevrolet celebrated its 50th year of truck manufacturing in 1968. Special Anniversary gold (code 551) with off-white (ivory – code 526) paint. It was a special order, celebratory, option. Interiors were available in a choice of white or black.
396 CID V-8 Option – High Torque V-8. Two versions were offered – a two barrel carbureted 9:1 compression ratio with 275 HP and a 4-barrel with 9.0:1 compression ratio and 310 HP. See Engine section for more information.
307 CID V-8 – Standard V-8. This, new for 1968 engine replaced the 283 CID V-8 as the standard eight-cylinder powerplant when a V-8 was ordered. It had a bore & stroke of 3.875 in. x 3.25 in for a displacement: 307 CID. The compression ratio was 9.0:1 giving 200 horsepower at 4800 rpm. A Rochester two-barrel.carburetor was fitted.

The all-steel pickup box introduced in 1967 featured full depth double-wall side panels and tailgate. Wood floors were available. As in 1967, resistance to corrosion has been greatly improved through the use of special bathtub-type fender skirts, unitized component construction and wheelhouse undercoating.
Inside, remained as in the previous year – a deep-dish 3-spoke steering wheel, telescoping steering column, padded dash and sun visor, recessed instruments, flat-surfaced control knobs, and safety belts. Fleetside models were available with either 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive and were available with 6½- or 8-ft. bed bodies and GVW ratings up to 7,600 lbs. Conventional models featured coil springs at all wheels plus independent front suspension to give a modern car-like ride.
The Stepside models continued with the new for 1967 cab and sheet metal that had been touted for the advantages of lower exterior height and length, greater interior roominess, improved forward visibility. As for the Fleetside, the Stepside had all of the 1967 advanced safety features, better resistance to rust and corrosion,. Stepside bodies were contained between the rear fenders to provide a completely unobstructed load compartment. Floors were of durable select wood with recessed steel skid strips.
Rubber covered support chains held tailgate in open position to handle long loads. Stepside pickups were offered with either conventional 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. All versions were available with 6½- or 8-ft. bodies and had the same chassis features as corresponding Fleetside models. A 9-ft. body is also offered on a 30 Series chassis with leaf-spring rear suspension and a maximum GVW rating of 7,800 lbs.
The sixth-generation Suburban and Panel came in only one wheelbase, 127.0″. A 3⁄4-ton C-20 Suburban was available and 4×4 K-10/K-20 models were also offered.
As in 1967, Suburbans were configured with a single driver-side door and two passenger doors. The rear-wheel-drive Suburban was also available as a panel truck for commercial purposes.The panel version could be had with either a closed rear section with no windows or with windows similar to the Suburban. The Panel had no side doors. All Panels, regardless of side windows, had windows fitted to the rear doors, unlike the Suburban, that had a station wagon-like rear hatch as standard., panel type swinging doors as an option.
The Suburban and Panel shared a large amount of mechanical commonality with its pickup-truck counterpart, sharing the same powertrain offerings. A 250-CID I-6 was standard, with a 292 CID I-6 offered as an option. 307 and 327 CID V-8s.
As in 1967, advanced engineering and redesigned power train configurations, reduced overall height by five inches while still retaining the normal transfer case to keep ground clearance of 12½ inches. In order to accomplish this, Chevrolet engineers relocated the 2-speed transfer case to a higher position and attached it directly to the transmission.
Cab and sheet metal were identical to that of Fleetside pickups. Frames however, are of heavier gauge steel to withstand the punishment of off-road use. Front and rear leaf spring suspensions were of a tapered leaf type which reduced inter-leaf friction and provided a smoother, more even ride. Three Fleetside and three Stepside pickup models were available with 4-wheel drive.
3/4-TON COMMERCIAL – MODEL C & K/SERIES 20 – SIX and V-8: Trucks in the Chevrolet 20 Series 3/4-ton line had the same styling and trim as 1/2-ton trucks. Suburbans and Panels were available. T3/4 ton models had the same dimensions as comparable 1/2-ton models, but with heavier chassis components. There were Step Side and Fleetside Pickups were in this series that featured the 8-ft. pickup box. The four-wheel drive 3/4-ton models in the 20 Series had a K25 model prefix.
