1970 Plymouth Barracuda Facts, Figures, and Specifications

1962 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information Data

The all-new model, styled by John E. Herlitz, was built on a shorter, wider version of Chrysler’s existing B platform, called the E-body. Thus, the Barracuda was now, according to Chrysler Corporation, “able to shake the stigma of “economy car.”

A Whole New Car!

The 1970 Barracuda’s restyle removed all its previous commonality with the Valiant.  The 1967-68 fastback design was deleted from the line and the Barracuda now consisted of only coupe and convertible models.

General Year Information – 1970 Plymouth Barracuda

Significant Styling Changes

The Barracuda line for 1970 offered buyers a wider choice of models and engines. Three styles were available with a total of nine engines. Stress was placed on extending the racy image of long hoods/short decks and rakish windshields. The specialty/performance class ‘Cuda offered an innovative “shaker” hood as an option.  The 426 CID ‘Street Hemi’ was available  – built in limited numbers.

Three versions were offered: the base Barracuda (Code BH), the luxury Gran Coupe (Code BP), and the sport model ‘Cuda (Code BS). However, beginning mid-year 1970, there also was a “Barracuda Coupe” model (Code A93), a lower-end version with the 198 CID I-6 base engine, a lower-grade interior, and had fixed rear quarter glass instead of roll-down rear r windows.

For 1970, the Barracuda and Barracuda Gran Coupe had two slant I-6 engines available — a new 198 CID version as well as the 225 CID unit. Four different V-8s were available: the 318, the 383 with a 2-barrel carburetor and single exhaust, and the 383 with a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust with 330 HP.

The ‘Cuda model used  383 CID 335 HP V-8 (as was used in the Road Runner) as the standard engine. Options included the 340 CID, 290 HP AAR Cuda “Six Barrel” (AAR only), with triple 2-barrel carburetors, a 440 CID 375 HP Super Commando, the 440 Six-Barrel (with triple 2-barrel carburetors  and 390 HP), and the 425 HP 426 CID Hemi.  The 440- and Hemi-equipped cars received upgraded suspension components and structural reinforcements.

Other Barracuda options included decal sets, 3 separate hood configurations, and unusual “high impact” colors such as “Lime Light”, “Bahama Yellow”, “Tor Red”, “Lemon Twist”, “Curious Yellow”, “Vitamin C”, “In-Violet”, “Sassy Grass” and “Moulin Rouge”.

Historical

Eighty-three percent of all Barracudas had bucket seats and only 18.5 percent had four-speed manual transmission.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda Facts – Plymouth in Racing

Plymouth embarked on a serious racing program in SCCA’s Trans Am Series. Swede Savage and Dan Gurney raced identical factory-sponsored AAR (All American Racers) ‘Cudas this year. The cars qualified for three pole positions but did not win any Trans-Am races; the highest finish was 2nd at Road America.

Four 1970 Hemi ‘Cudas were also successfully raced by Chrysler France, staring in this year. The works team director Henrí Chemin piloted the first car, and then sold it on to friend and privateer J. F. Mas who went on to race it for another two years. This Hemi ‘Cuda won four French Group 1 class championships, three on track and one in hill climbing.

1970 Plymouth Barracuda Factoids

The Hemi Cuda had the 425HP Hemi V-8 engine. It could be backed by either a 3-speed automatic or a 4-speed manual transmission. Automatics received the 8.75″ rear axle standard, while 4-speed cars came with the Dana 60. All Hemi ‘Cudas had the Shaker hood setup. Hemi ‘Cudas came with 15″ x 7″ wheels, which were optional on other ‘Cudas. Only Hemi cars got F60-15 tires. See the Plymouth Rapid Transit Performance Brochure for more information HERE.

The AAR ‘Cuda was released in March 1970. It was a tribute to Dan Gurney’s All American Racers (AAR) Barracudas being run in the SCCA Trans Am series. It  was only produced for 1970. The factory AAR ‘Cuda was built to homologate the Plymouth small-block engine for SCCA racing use. It was powered by a 290 HP 340 CID 6-barrel V-8. It also has a fiberglass hood and spoiler, and side exit exhausts. Only 2,724 AAR ‘Cudas were built.
