General Year Information – 1971 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars

For the 1971 model year, Pontiac dropped the Tempest name altogether and changed its mid-size lineup nameplates as: T-37, LeMans GT-37, LeMans, and LeMans Sport, the GTO and GTO Judge were separate lines. Two-door coupes and four-door sedans were available with T-37, LeMans, and LeMans Sport. The 2-door Hardtop was available across the series, while the convertible model was limited to LeMans Sport and the GTO line.

The GT-37 sport model returned as an option package for T-37 models. It was marketed as “The GTO for Kids under 30”. The GT-37 received the same features as the previous year with the exception of new eyebrow-type side striping similar to that of the GTO Judge model. In mid-March 1971, a second design change for the GT-37 switched the striping to a reflective sword-style stripe sometimes referred to as the 1971.5 GT-37.

In 1971, regardless of body style or model, one could choose to choose any of Pontiac’s optional V-8s, from the 350, to the 400, or 455 CID sizes, including the 455 HO engine. Prior to this, the 455 had only been available on the GTO. All 1971 engines were delivered with with lower compression ratios to run on lower-octane gasoline.

Due to the drop in compression ratios for 1971, the 455 HO became the major performance engine at Pontiac. This was the large journal version of the block introduced in late 1961 at 421 CID. Bore and stroke was 4.125″ x 3.750″. Compression ratio: 8.4:1. Horsepower: 335 @ 4800 RPM. Torque: 480 @ 3600 RPM.

Pillared coupes and sedans did not have “flow thru” ventilation and instead  had chrome edged Ventiplanes.

The GT-37 sport model was available. It was advertised as “The GTO For Kids Under 30”. Other models available were: 4-door sedan, Coupe and Hardtop Coupe.

Series 235:  LeMans models had the word ‘Pontiac’ on the left-hand grille and carried vertical slash louvers behind the wheel wells and “LeMans” under the rear fender crease lines. Unlike the T-37 models, front disc brakes were not standard equipment. Extra features on LeMans included richer upholstery, loop-pile carpets, safety rear arm rests with integral ash trays, wood-grained dash, concealed wipers, rocker panel moldings, hood rear edge moldings, side window reveals on coupes and vent windows on four-door styles. Station wagons had two-way tailgates and power front disc brakes.

Models available were: 4-door sedan, 4-door hardtop, Coupe, and hardtop coupe. Station wagons were considered part of the LeMans line.

Series 237: Standard equipment in LeMans Sport models included all items found in LeMans models plus dual horns, pedal trim plates, ash tray and glove box lamps, courtesy lamps on convertibles, carpeted lower door panels, custom cushion steering wheel and wheel well moldings. Two-door hardtops and convertible buyers could choose knit vinyl bucket seats or notch bench seats The four-door hardtop was fitted with knit vinyl bench seats. “LeMans Sport” name plates were placed on the sides of rear fenders. The GTO type Endura rubber front fascia was a $74 option for all LeMans Sport models.

Models available were 4-door hardtop, hardtop coupe, and convertible.

SERIES 242:  A new Endura front fascia was installed on the 1971 GTO. It had larger twin grilles, round parking lamps and integral body colored bumpers. Other characteristics included twin air intakes at the front of the hood and “GTO” on left-hand grille, as well as on the front fenders and right-hand edge of the rear deck lid.

Standard equipment included all items found on LeMans models plus engine turned aluminum dash inserts, dual exhausts with extensions through valance panel, power-flex cooling fan, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, shock absorbers and springs and G70-14 blackwall tires.

Models available were: 2-door hardtop coupe and convertible. The “Judge” option was still available.
