1964 Plymouth Facts, Figures, and Specifications
1964 Plymouths – Sharp and Sexy
Plymouth styling was updated for 1964. The entire rear end was lengthened almost 2 inches and it was more tapered than in the previous season. Hardtops had a new, cantilevered type roof pillar. Standard equipment was similar to 1963. Significantly, the 426 CID V-8 was offered as a “Street” package, de-tuned from the race engine – but still potent!

1964 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1964 Plymouth Mid-Size Cars
The 1964 Plymouth is categorized in our Fact Sheets as a mid-size car due to its 116 inch wheelbase. While there were no full size cars in Plymouth’s lineup, Dodge and Chrysler both featured full size cars on a 122 inch wheelbase. Plymouth did not offer a full size 118-122 inch wheelbase car in 1964.
NOTE: The Plymouth Valiant and newly introduced Barracuda were compact cars and are not covered in this Fact Sheet.
Once gain – A New Look
Plymouth mid-size cars were restyled again for 1964. A beveled edge feature line was used for the roofs of sedans, while hardtops had a new, cantilevered type roof pillar. With the hardtops, an extra-large, warp around backlight was employed and the pillars were much wider at the top than the bottom. A full-width grille was seen. It was “veed” to the horizontal plane and featured an insert with six ‘stacks’ of short horizontal blades, segmented by vertical division bars. There were wider horizontal blade sections at the outboard ends, into which the dual headlamps were placed side-by-side. A more massive front bumper, housing the parking lamps, was used. At the rear, the 1963 look was further refined.
The engine lineup was simplified: the 318 CID V-8 remained as the base engine, with the 265 HP 361 CID “Commando 361” V-8 being the intermediate selection, while the 383 CID “Commando 383” remained as the only version at this size. Replacing the Hi-Po 383 CID V-8s was the new “Commando 426”, as 426 CID V-8 utilizing the 383’s parts and pieces on the new larger block.
Historical
New was a street-tuned ‘426-S’ version of 365 horsepower. On February 9, 1964, the return of the “Hemi” was announced. This new “Super Commando V-8 could only be purchased, over the counter, for about $1,800. Three versions were available – under-rated at 410, 415 or 425 horsepower were available, but only to professional racer teams.

A 426 CID Street wedge-head block was made available beginning in 1964. It was directly related to the 383 CID single 4-barrel high performance V-8 but based on the high-deck “RB” block. Rated at 365 horsepower, it was immediately adopted by the buying public – a total of 6,359 Chrysler products were built with 426 cubic inch engines for model year 1964. See the Plymouth Mid-Size Car AMA Specifications Sheet HERE.

The 426 CID Super Stock III V-8 replaced the Super Stock 426 II. HP ratings were the same at 415 HP at 5600 RPM with 11.0 and 425 HP with 12.5 compression. Cast, equal length headers were a new feature and further improved cylinder heads. See the 1964 Supper Stock III Owner’s Manual in our downloads or click HERE.

The 426 CID Hemi V-8 arrived this year. Built around the RB wedge block, it had many improvements over that unit including cross-bolted mains, the fantastic Hemi cylinder heads and much more. See the Hemi Tech Bulletin in our downloads or click HERE.
