1969 Ford Mustang Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Ford Mustang Facts

Mustangs had quad headlights, the outboard units being mounted in deeply recessed openings at the outer edges of the fenders. The inboard units were mounted inside the grille opening. The side scoop was now located high on the rear fenders of fastback models. It was in the same location as before on the hardtops and convertibles, but now faced rearward. High-performance was the theme for Ford in 1969 and the hot new Mustangs were in the spotlight. The sizzling Mach I came with a 351 CID V-8 as standard equipment. The 390 CID V-8 and 428 CJ V-8 engines were optional. The 428 Cobra Jet was now a popular option and 13,261 were delivered.

The top engine option for 1969 Mustangs became the Boss 429. Even though they came with a factory horsepower rating of 375, actual output was much higher. The engine was fitted to the Mustang to homologate it for NASCAR.

Racing Notes

Trans-Am road racing was very popular at this time. To compete with the Chevrolet Camaro race cars, Ford introduced the famous and successful Boss 302 Mustang.

Ford’s experience in Trans Am racing led them to recognize that the “Tunnel Port” 302 CID V-8 of 1968 was not competitive with Chevrolet’s Z-28. For 1969 the Cleveland-head canted valve 302 was introduced, along with the Specific model the Boss 302. See the Brochure HERE.

In order to compete in NASCAR with Chrysler Corporation’s Hemi, a new motor was needed. The redesigned  and most successful 429 CID canted valve – almost hemispherical head – Boss 429 was the result. For unknown reasons, it was only available in the Mustang, a car not raced in these events!  See the Brochure   HERE.

The new 351 CID V-8 resulted from a stroke increase from 3.00″ to 3.50″, requiring adding 1.275″ to the block’s deck height so that a crank with this greater stroke could be used. The block was strengthened with heavier cylinder walls and bulkheads around the mains and the crankshaft main and rod bearings were increased to 3.0o” and 2.2486″ respectively. See The AMA Specifications Sheet on this engine HERE.
