1962 Ford Facts, Figures, and Specifications
Ford Chose Refinement for 1962
The 1962 Galaxies and full size line were completely restyled but retained the styling clues from the previous year. brand identification was critical in these highly competitive years. Except for one horizontal feature line at the belt line, the body was slab-sided. The wheelbase remained the same as 1961, at 119 inches and the body length was close to equal at 209.3 inches. Performance engines gained more CID – up to 406, and a few more horses at 405.

1962 Ford Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1962 Ford Full Size Car
For 1962, all full size Fords that were not station wagons were called “Galaxie”; Galaxie, Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500 XL. The swept-back roof line 2-door hardtop Starliner was no longer available, replaced by the notch back Victoria. In station wagons, the 2-door Ranch Wagon was also eliminated, with only two models, the 4-door Country Sedan and the Country Squire remaining. Both wagons were available in 6- and 9-passenger configurations.
The Galaxie model designation was in script toward the bottom rear of the rear fender. Ford continued the 1961 tradition of a single large round taillight on either side, with the taillights on Galaxie 500s being separated by a stamped aluminum escutcheon panel. That model designation was spelled out in block letters across the trunk lid. At the front end, a full-width grille carried a horizontal grid pattern and was capped on each end by dual headlights. The Ford crest was centered at the front of the hood throughout the full-size line.
The top performance engine rose from 390 CID to 406 CID. It had parts and pieces upgraded to increase longevity in circle track racing. All other V-8s remained at previous levels.

The Galaxie 500XL series was new for 1962. It was the “sport series” of the Galaxie line and the interior reflected that image with bucket seats and a console with shifter. The materials were of high quality and very well styled – setting a standard for year to come in the XL model. You can see more detail in the Brochure HERE.

The 406 CID V-8 FE block replaced the high output 390 CID V-8 and horsepower rose from 401 to 405 HP in the top engine. You can see all the specs in the 1962 Ford High Performance AMA Specifications Sheets HERE!

The “XL” models included. all the trim of the Galaxie 500 models but offered bucket seats and a floor mounted shift lever, as well as an engine-turned insert in the instrument panel, and on the side stripe. The Galaxie 500 XL was available as a 2-door hardtop and Convertible.
The Ranch Wagon was the base trim level Station Wagon, the Country Sedans were the intermediate level, and the Country Squires were the top trim level. The level of equipment paralleled Galaxie, Galaxie 500 and Galaxie 500XL models of passenger cars, however, bucket seats and the 406 CID V-8 were not available in the Country Squire.
All wagons were 4-door, and the Ranch Wagon was only available in 6-passenger configuration, while the Country Sedan and Country Squire were available in both 6- and 9-passenger levels.
