Five Fast Facts You May Not Know
1967 – Enhancements & an Updated V-8 For the GTO
While the body style was little changed, All GTOs received an updated V-8 with increased displacement – now at 400 CID – including improved cylinder heads. Brightwork and options were the big adds for the 1967 GTO. Most notable were the new 400 CID V-8, a special Ram Air V-8, and a hood tachometer. The Tempest/LeMans line remained little changed.

1967 Pontiac Mid-Size Car Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1967 Pontiac Mid-Size Cars
The introduction of the Firebird ponycar and the impending body style changes for 1968 held the line to only minor styling and unseen improvements. All Tempests were mildly face-lifted with grille and rear panel treatments varying by series. It was a quiet year for the mid-sized Pontiac, though GTO performance took a step up with more true horsepower under the hood.
Tempest/LeMans
Only minor changes were made to the 1967 Tempest, Custom and Le Mans models. The Rochester four-barrel carburetor replaced the standard Carter AFB four-barrel. The 326 CID V8s were unchanged. The four-barrel OHC six was up-rated to 215 HP. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player and hood-mounted tachometer. While the GTO received the 3-Speed TH-400 automatic transmission, this part of the line made do with the 2-Speed Buick-sourced Super Turbine 300.
A collapsible steering column with an energy-absorbing steering wheel accompanied by a padded instrument panel, non-protruding control knobs, and four-way emergency flashers became standard. A shoulder belt option was also available, and the brake master cylinder was now a dual reservoir unit with a backup hydraulic circuit.
Tempest/LeMans sales for 1967 totaled 218,747 units: Tempest – 34,009 produced, Tempest Custom – 75,325 produced, LeMans – 109,413 produced.
GTO
The GTO underwent a few styling changes in 1967. The louver-covered taillights were replaced with eight tail lights, four on each side. Rally II wheels with colored lug nuts were also available in 1967. The GTO emblems on the rear fenders were moved to the chrome rocker panels. The grille was changed from a purely split grille to one that with a different background.
The GTO also saw several mechanical changes in 1967. The Tri-Power carburetion system was replaced with a single 4-barrel Rochester Quadrajet carburetor. The 389 CID V-8 received a larger cylinder bore 4.12 inches for a new displacement of 400 CID, which was available in three versions: economy, standard, and HO. The economy engine used a two-barrel carburetor and was rated at 265 HP. The standard engine was rated at 335 HP. The HO (high output) V-8 produced 360 HP. The HO engine was available with Ram Air. Emission controls were fitted to All V-8s sold in California.
The two-speed automatic transmission was also replaced with a three-speed Turbo Hydramatic TH-400, which was equipped with a Hurst Performance dual-gate shifter, called a “his/hers” shifter – it permitted either automatic shifting in “drive” or manual selection through the gears. Front disc brakes were also an option.
The GTO sales for 1967 totaled 81,722 units: Hardtop – 65,176 produced, Convertible – 9,517 produced, Sports coupe – 7,029 produced.

In a GM management ruling, only the Corvette may have multiple carburetors. As a result, the famous Tri-Power manifold, around since 1957, was no more. Fortunately, the new Rochester Quadra-Jet – with its huge secondary venturi that replaced a considerable amount of the air flow. The legendary intake would no longer define a performance Pontiac.
Redesigned cylinder heads were fitted to the 400 and 428 CID V-8s, moving the center of combustion directly over the centerline of the cylinder for greater efficiency. In the change, the valve stem angle was reduced to 14° and a new guide for the pushrods was incorporated. Wider spacing between intake and exhaust valves was accomplished to better accommodate the larger valve diameters.
The new small journal engine was now 400 CID. With a bore and stroke of 4.125″ x 3.750″ and a compression ratio of 10.5:1 it came in economy, regular & performance. There were five 400 CID V-8 choices available: 255 HP economy, 335 HP (manual transmission), 335 HP (auto transmission), 360 HP “HO”, and 360 HP “Ram Air”. See 1967 the AMA Specifications Sheet for more information HERE.
New this year was a dual master-cylinder braking system and optional front disc brakes. This greatly improved stopping power and distance. Unfortunately, they were an option and many cars were not fitted with them.

Tempest – Series 233 – The base models had new molded plastic grille bars arranged vertically, in groups of four, with wide spaces between them. Three block-shaped tail-lamp lenses set into rectangular frames were seen. The Tempest name appeared behind the front wheel opening, and the rear fender had three horizon tall slits on the side which housed side markers. All GM safety features were standard plus vinyl floor mats, cigar lighters, arm rests, heater and defroster, five blackwall tubeless tires and standard type steering wheel.
Tempest models were 2-door Sport Coupe, 4-door Sedan and 6-passenger Station Wagon.
Tempest Custom – Series 235 – Standard equipment on Tempest Custom models included special interior trim, carpeting, Deluxe steering wheel and courtesy lamps on convertibles. There were no horizontal slits on the rear fender sides and the nameplate behind the front wheel opening carried Tempest Custom lettering. Upper belt line and wheel opening decor moldings were used.
Tempest Custom Models were 2-door Sport Coupe, 2-door Hardtop Coupe, 4-door Sedan, 4-door Hardtop Sedan, Convertible and 6-passenger Station Wagon.
LeMans – 237 and 239 – LeMans buyers received all Tempest Custom features plus carpeting, front foam seat cushions and lamps for the ash tray, cigar lighter and glove box. Two-door models had three vertical air slots on rear fenders and had a choice of bucket or notch back bench seats with arm rests. Four-door hardtops came with cloth and Morrokide trim and short, slanting chrome slashes on the rear roof pillar. Other styles had all-Morrokide upholstery.
A special station wagon with wood-grained exterior paneling was added as the Series 239 Tempest Safari and was finished in LeMans level-trim and appointments.
LeMans models were 2-door Sport Coupe, 2-door Hardtop Coupe, 4-door Hardtop Sedan, Convertible and 6-passenger Safari Station Wagon.
GTO – Series 242 – The trim along the center grille divider now went from one side of the car to the other, with a dip around the center divider. The GTO V-shaped fender badges behind the front wheel opening were moved down to the stainless sill moldings. Like the Grand Prix, the GTO had twin pin stripes along the upper belt-line region. Body side accent moldings were slightly revised. Rectangular front grille parking lamps were still used in front and the taillights now took the form of four thin rectangles at each side.
All LeMans features were standard on the GTO plus unique walnut grain dash inserts, heavy-duty shocks, springs and stabilizer bars, Red Line or whitewall tires, dual exhausts and a 335 horse power four-barrel, 400 cubic inch V-8. Five 400 CID V-8 engine choices were available: 255 HP, 335 HP (manual transmission), 335 HP (automatic transmission), 360 HP “HO”, and 360 HP “Ram Air”.
GTO models were 2-door Sport Coupe, 2-door Hardtop Coupe, and Convertible.
