Unexpected but desired and acquired – in huge numbers!
Ford Mustang –
All New for 1964
The Ford Mustang was introduced to the press on April 14, 1964 and to the public on April 17, 1964.
Mustangs could be ordered powered by everything from 101 horsepower six-cylinder engine to a wild, solid-lifter high-performance 289 CID V-8, with 271 Horses!
General Year Information – 1964 Ford Mustang
Though labeled a 1965 model, the Mustang was released in April of 1964 – well ahead of the rest of the Ford line. It was different enough in certain aspects that we’ve cataloged it as a 1964 model.
Thus, the biggest news at Ford for 1964 was not the restyling of the Galaxie, Fairlane, Falcon or Thunderbird. It was the April 14 introduction of the Mustang – a small, sporty car that caught the rest of the automotive industry totally off guard and caught the hearts of the American car buying public.
It combined sporty looks, economy and brisk performance in a package which had a base price of $2368. Mustangs could be equipped to be anything from absolute economy cars, to luxury sports cars.
Mustangs came powered by everything from the very tame 101 horsepower, 170 cubic inch six-cylinder engine, to a wild, solid-lifter high-performance 289 CID V-8, with 271 HP, available only with the four-speed manual transmission.
Historical Notes
Mustang was introduced to the press on April 14, and the public on April 17, 1964. Lee Iaccoca headed an eight-man committee that conceived the idea for the new car and brought it to fruition. Stylists Joe Oros, Gail Halderman and David Ash designed the car. The clean styling of the new Mustang garnered it the Tiffany Award for Excellence in American Design, the first and only automobile ever to be so honored by Tiffany & Company.
A 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible was also selected as the Indy 500 pace car. Model year production (only five months) was 126,538 units.

While the 260 CID V-8 is the base engine, and the 289 CID is an option, few expected the 271 HP 289 CID V-8 to be immediately available. This changed the Mustang from a perky little sporty car to a bonafide performance machine. See an original test of the early Hi-Po HERE.
While Ford was confident that the car would be a hit, they were astounded that, in the short 5-month period, 126,538 Mustangs were sold! See an introductory test of the 1964 Mustangs HERE.
