1964 Chevrolet Facts, Figures, and Specifications

1964 Chevrolet Facts Specifications Information Data

Chevrolet’s plushest and most sporting model, the new Super Sport, was available only as a Sport Coupe or Convertible. Surprisingly, I-6 and V-8 models were available, though the car exuded speed and power in this trim.

1964 Chevrolet Restyles Again

Chevrolet continued with the same size car offered since 1961. The new styling actually made the car look smaller and more lithe than the ’63 models – going back to the feeling of the 1961 offeing while reducing the sharp corners of that earlier car.

General Year Information – 1964 Chevrolet
Full Size Car Facts

For 1964, the Chevrolet was restyled to a more rounded, softer look. The taillight assembly had an “upside-down U” shaped aluminum trim strip above the taillights, but the individual lights were surrounded by a body-colored panel.  Rooflines were carried over from 1963 unchanged. All full size 1964 Chevrolet station wagons got small rectangular taillight lenses mounted vertically, one for each side of the car.

The 409 CID V8 engine returned as the high performance option with 425 HP. All other engine options remained the same as 1963.

The Super Sport was now its own model line, and still only for the Sport Coupe and Convertible. Bucket seats and a special dash were part of the Super Sport model line.

Biscayne was still Chevrolet’s most inexpensive line. Standard features included heater and defroster, dual sun visors, color keyed floor carpeting, foam-cushioned seats, cigarette lighter, glove compartment lock, dual-spoke steering wheel with horn ring, front and rear arm rests, ash tray, crank-operated ventipanes, and two coat hooks. Interiors were patterned cloth and leather grain vinyl combinations, with all-vinyl door panels and an embossed vinyl headliners. Spatter pattern paint was used in the luggage compartment.

As in the past, Chevrolet’s middle-priced line was still the Bel Ar. For 1964 the model had less exterior distinction than before, but a plusher interior. Standard equipment included all the Biscayne features: heater and defroster, dual sun visors, color keyed floor carpeting, foam-cushioned seats, cigarette lighter, glove compartment lock, dual-spoke steering wheel with horn ring, front and rear arm rests, ash tray, crank-operated ventipanes, and two coat hooks, plus bright door trim accents; plastic cowl side panels with molded-in ventilation grilles; a bright instrument panel molding; glove compartment light; dome light door switches: Deluxe quality interior handles and a patterned rubber luggage compartment mat. On the exterior, a narrow, full-length upper body bright molding and a slender body sill molding were fitted. “Bel Air” in script and Chevrolet badges were on the rear fenders. Dual rear cove moldings were used, with twin-unit tail lights. Bright roof drip cap moldings were also part of the Bel Air line.

The separation of Impala Super Sport models into their own series made the regular Impala the second most expensive Chevrolet line for 1964. Standard equipment included most features found on the Bel Air, plus extra-thick foam cushion seats, bright aluminum front seat end panels, bright instrument panel insert with nameplate molding, electric clock, parking brake warning light, an Impala emblem on steering wheel center, chrome backed rear view mirror, specific paddle-type front and rear arm rests (with finger-tip door release lever), dual dome lights, windshield, rear window and upper side window interior moldings, and an automatic luggage compartment light. Convertible and Station wagons had all vinyl trim without any fabric.

Chevrolet’s most upscale and and most sporting model was available only in Sport Coupe and Convertible. Standard equipment was that of the Impala, with the addition of  leather-grained vinyl upholstery with individual front bucket seats and a center console with locking compartment. Swirl-pattern instrument panel inserts and moldings were part of the model. Also added was a built-in rear seat radio speaker grille. Dual dome and floor courtesy lamps, with automatic door switches and manual instrument panel controls were used. Door safety reflectors were attached to the all-vinyl door panels. Special “SS” emblems were fitted to the console and door panels.

Exteriors were distinctive with a wider upper body molding filled with a swirl-pattern silver anodized insert. “Impala” in lettering and the “SS” badge was fitted to the rear fenders with another “SS” badge on the deck lid. The rear cove outline moldings were filled with silver-anodized inserts. Full wheel covers with a specific Super Sport design were used.
