1964 – Valiant Gets a V-8!
Building on a worldwide record sales success in 1963, Plymouth merely re-trimmed the new Valiant body it had released in 1963. The most obvious styling change was a new grille with a horizontal bar theme. In mid-1964, Chrysler released an all-new 273 CID V-8 engine as optional equipment in all Valiant models.

1964 Plymouth Valiant Facts – General Information
Building on a worldwide record sales success in 1963, Plymouth merely re-trimmed the new Valiant body it had released in 1963. The most obvious styling change was a new grille with a horizontal bar theme. A medallion was placed at the center of the grille where the bars had a flat bulge. At the rear, the taillights were redone and were now positioned vertically in the ends of the fenders. The ring style rear deck decoration was replaced with a Valiant script, located at the right-hand corner.
V-8 Engine Arrives
In mid-1964, Chrysler released an all-new 273 CID V-8 engine as optional equipment in all Valiant models. This compact V-8, was the first in Chrysler’s “LA” series – an engine that would last until 2002. It was specifically engineered to fit in the compact A-body Valiant Dart engine compartment. Valiant models with the optional 273 CID engine received V-shaped emblems at the fronts of the fenders.

The 273 CID LA lightweight wedge V-8 bowed in the Valiant and Barracuda. It was the first LA engine, beginning this year and offered through 1969, rated at 180 HP. It had a bore and stroke of 3.625″× 3.310″. Surprisingly, it used mechanical lifters when introduced. The Chrysler 4-speed manual transmission “New Process A-833” was introduced for the 1964 model year as Chrysler’s first in-house four-speed gearbox. It replaced the light-duty Borg-Warner T-10 used in 1963 and featured fully synchronized forward gears and a cast-iron case.

Valiant V-100 Series – The V-100 was in the base series. Standard features included heater and defroster, vinyl trim, turn signals, courtesy lights, front door arm rests, and five tubeless black sidewall. The new 273 cubic inch V-8 was optional in all Valiants – there was no separate V-8 series. Passenger cars had “V-100” logos on the rear roof ‘C’ pillar, station wagons had “Valiant” behind the front wheel housing and small V-100 nameplates on their narrow ‘C’ pillars.
V-100 models were 2-door Sedan, 2-door Sport Coupe, 4-door Sedan, and Station Wagon
Valiant V-200 Series – The V-200 trim distinctions were a triangular badge on the deck lid centerline, a latch panel beauty molding, thin belt line moldings, bright metal roof gutter rails, and lower body side moldings. A small plate bearing the series designation was placed under the Valiant logo at the right-hand corner of the deck lid. V-200 models had all of the V-100 equipment plus full wheel covers, upgraded upholstery, DeLuxe carpeting, front and rear arm rests, instrument panel beauty moldings, and cigarette lighter.
V-200 models were 2-door Sedan, 4-door Sedan, Convertible, and Station Wagon.
Valiant Signet 200 Series – The Signet model was upgraded with foam rubber front seat cushions and attractively styled wheel covers all V-200 features were standard. A lower bodyside molding stretched horizontally between the wheel housings and was complemented by another molding on the lower rear quarter “projectile” flare. The front fender, ahead of the wheel housing, carried a chrome Signet logo and “200” plate. Bucket seats were standard. Cars with the optional 273 CID V-8 engine came with V-shaped emblems at the sides of the cowl.
Signet models were 2-door Hardtop and Convertible.
