The Last Year of a Good Run

The 1963  Thunderbird was little changed for 1963, in anticipation of the new and restyled arrival of the 1964 models. The triple carb 340 HP Sports Roadster was promoted heavily, but still sold modestly as performance moved down to lower-priced cars chasing the younger generations.

General Year Information – 1963 Ford Thunderbird

Few changes were made to the Thunderbird for 1963, as Ford prepared to introduce a new version for 1964. A horizontal styling line was added that ran from the front of the car back through the door. Small diagonal chrome bars were added in this area on the door.  In January 1963, a Limited Edition Thunderbird Landau was introduced and was available only with Maroon exterior color, white top, white steering wheel and white leather interior. This model is often referred to as the Monaco Edition, as it was introduced in Monaco, Morocco.

Alternators replaced generators on this year’s Thunderbirds.  A single exhaust system was included as standard equipment for the first and only time on the 300 HP V-8, except for the convertible, and the 340 HP version continued with dual exhaust.

Historical
Production dropped from 78,011 to 63,313. It was time for a new model and 1964 would bring a dramatic change. Meanwhile in its three year run, 214,375 “bullet nose” Thunderbirds were sold!

The 1963 Thunderbirds were so slightly changed that only a close look will distinguish them. The body sculpting on the side panels was redone and “slashes of chrome faux louvers were placed on the door. All else was much the same.

The Sports Roadster returned, but its triple-carbureted 390 CID V-8 was an option. Its high price and the steady movement of the youth market toward mid-priced cars derailed sales. only 455 were sold.
