1955 Lincoln Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1955 Lincoln
In 1955, the Lincoln featured a new larger 341 CID V-8. It was much more powerful at 225 HP with a higher 8.5:1 compression ratio. It used a new Series 4000 four-barrel Holley carburetor, and now it was mated to a Ford-built 3-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission. It would be the only year for the 341 CID engine. Aside from the increase in CID, it also featured a new camshaft with shorter duration and higher lift for more low end grunt.
Still riding on a 123.0 inch wheelbase and now measuring 215.6 inches overall, the 1955 Custom was offered as a two-door hardtop coupe , and the Capri featured a two-door hardtop coupe, a two-door convertible or a four-door sedan. At the front, little was changed, with the headlight bezels adopted the Corporation’s forward top-pointed look. The rear fenders were extended and had a cut back slash containing smaller taillights. This did give the car a more aggressive look.
The Lincoln followed other US makers to offer an automatic headlight dimmer as optional equipment. Custom only sold 3,549 unit s this year while Capri 23,673 copies – 87% of Lincoln’s total output that year. Total sales were down from 36,311 in 1954 to 27,222, a surprise in the 1955 booming sales year for US makes. Styling needed a revision, and while the car was touted for its brisk performance and great handling, Lincoln had stayed too long in a look started in 1952.
Historical
On April 18, 1955, Lincoln became a separate division of the Ford Motor Company. Since October 1945 it had been part of the Lincoln-Mercury Division.

The sturdy and reliable V-8 that had powered the Lincoln to three straight Pan-American Road Race wins was increased to 341 CID and gained 20 HP. This was accomplished with an increase in bore size from 3.80 inches to 3.94 inches. Compression ratio was up from 8.0:1 to 8.5:1 along with a different camshaft profile that increased lift from 0.354 inches to 0.384 inches.
After the debacle of 1953 where the use of GM’s excellent 4-speed Hydra-Matic was curtailed by the huge fire at the plant, Lincoln set about using their own Ford-Mercury three speed unit, strengthened to handle the 342 ft. lbs. of torque. Called “Turbo Drive” in Lincoln. It served well until the new 3-speed was introduced in 1958.
