1959 Plymouth Mid-Size Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1959 Plymouth Facts

In 1959, Plymouth introduced the Sport Fury as its top model, with the Fury nameplate as its second from the top model. It replaced the Plymouth Belvedere at the top of the Plymouth line-up. The Belvedere became the middle range. The Savoy became the least expensive model, and the Plaza line was discontinued.

New styling included a twin section anodized aluminum egg crate grille insert, new front fenders called “double-barrel”, longer, outward canted rear tailfins, oval-shaped horizontal taillights and flatter, more sweeping rear deck contours. A new feature on the Sport Fury was the faux continental tire “Rear Sport Deck” placed on the rear trunk. Swivel front bucket seats were now an option.

The 350 CID V-8 was replaced with a 361 CID version of the Golden Commando with a single four-barrel carburetor only. The dual four-barrel version of the 318 CID V-8 was retired, with either a single two or four-barrel carburetor. Thus the V-8 engine lineup consisted of two 318 CID V-8s and one 361 CID engine.

Sport Fury
The Sport Fury replaced the Fury nameplate and was considered the performance line. It was available as a 2-door Hardtop or Convertible. The base engine was the 260 HP 318 CID 4-barrel V-8, with the “Golden Commando” 361 CID V-8 with a single 4-barrel and producing 305 HP. Surprisingly, there were no other performance engines offered at Plymouth this year. NOTE: The 305 HP 361 was available as a performance upgrade across all lines.

Fury
The new Fury line Fury was now available in 4-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop and 4-door Hardtop models and the Sport Fury as a 2-door Hardtop and a Convertible. The station wagon version of the Fury was the Sport Suburban, which was not marketed as a Fury. The Sport Fury nameplate was dropped at the end of 1959 but was reintroduced in mid-1962 in the mid-size line and was later discontinued in 1971.

Savoy
The Savoy was now the entry-level full-size Plymouth. The two hardtop models were dropped, as well as the side trim and interior appointments. Sales were still strong as the Savoy became the vehicle used by taxicab companies, police departments, and other fleet customers. The Savoy model was for customers who were in the market for a low-cost, economical vehicle with the availability of a V-8 engine and automatic transmission, and the roominess of a full-size vehicle.

Plaza
In 1959, Plymouth dropped the Plaza and replaced it with the Savoy.

1959 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information DataSwivel Bucket Seats were standard on the Sport Fury and available as an option on a hardtops, convertibles and even the Sport Suburban wagon this year. It was a popular offering, but its cost deterred many from choosing it.

1959 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information DataIn a surprising move, Plymouth offered only one performance engine for 1959, the 361 CID single 4-barrel B-Series V-8. Many Plymouth performance fans were upset, causing the factory to offer the dual 4-barrel unit available on Dodge D-500s as a dealer installed option.

1959 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information DataPlymouth redesigned the dashboard for 1959, replacing what many called a “Taxicab” look. The new dash also changed the Push Button transmission controls to a almost vertical, in line configuration and had the heater controls match the look.

1959 Plymouth Facts Specifications Information DataThe faux spare tire cover was a styling option and standard on the Sport Fury. It was available on all Chrysler Corporation models, and not surprisingly panned across the board too – called by some the “toilet seat”.

1959 Plymouth Facts – Models Offered

Savoy & Suburban –  Savoy line was now the base offering. Identification features included Savoy rear fender nameplate, single side spears running from the front wheel opening to the back of the car and small hub caps. Included as standard equipment were directional signals, single-speed electric windshield wipers, left-hand sun visor, dual horns, five tubeless tires, bumper jack and wheel lug wrench. The DeLuxe Suburban was now available in two or four-door styles and was the station wagon counterpart of Savoy models. The two-door wagons had thin, straight roof pillars, while the four-door models had a thicker ‘C’ pillar and “flattop” rear roof look. Dual side trim moldings, with aluminum fin-shaped inserts below the  greenhouse  area, were optional on low-priced Plymouths.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 2-door Club Sedan, 2-door Business Coupe,  and 2-door and 4-door Deluxe Suburban wagons.

Belvedere & Custom Suburban – Belvedere models and Custom Suburban wagons represented middle line Plymouths for 1959. The side trim moldings on these cars began behind the front wheel opening, flaring into a fin-shaped, tapering dual molding. This arrangement ran from just ahead of the front door, to the extreme rear of the body. Belvedere or Custom Suburban model nameplates were set near the tops of the fins. Equipment included at regular price began with all items found on Savoy models and added foam seat cushions, arm rests, horn ring, and dual sun visors. A special silver anodized insert could be ordered to fill the area between the body side moldings. As in the past, the Belvedere convertible was offered only with V-8 power.  Plymouth again offered three types of Custom Suburbans this season. Six-passenger editions came in two and four-door styles, while the 4-doorl could also be had with a rear-facing third seat.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 4-door Hardtop Sedan, 2-door Club Sedan, 2-door Sport Coupe hardtop, Convertible, and 2-door and 4-door Custom Suburban wagons with the 4-door Custom Suburban available in 6- and 9-passenger versions.

Fury & Sport Suburban – Furys and Sport Suburbans were marketed as higher-level offerings and came only with V-8 attachments. Standard features included all items mentioned for the Belvedere Series, plus disc wheel covers, rear quarter stone shields, DeLuxe steering wheel with horn ring, electric clock, lockable glove compartment, cigar lighter, and oil filter. “Fury” in script was positioned high on the tail fins. Side chrome was of a dual molding type which began as a single spear behind the headlamps, flared into a double level arrangement behind the front wheel opening and tapered to a point in front of the taillamp wraparound edges. A single molding then continued around the rear body corner and fully across the rear deck lid overhang. “Plymouth”, in chrome, was placed at the left-hand corner of the deck lid. The rear bumper ran straight across the car and wrapped around the body corners, with a center depression below the license plate holder.

The model line consisted of 4-door Sedan, 4-door Sport Sedan hardtop, 2-door Sport Coupe hardtop, and 4-door Sport Suburban wagons in 6- and 9-passenger configurations. No convertible was available in the Fury line.

Sport Fury – In past years the limited-edition Fury had been designated a high-line model and was actually part of the Belvedere sub-series. This season the Sport Fury became the premium offering and represented a fourth line. Two body styles, sports coupe and convertible, were marketed and were only available with V-8 power. Sport Fury models had several special identification features. The upper branch of the dual side spears curved upward on the rear fenders, to repeat the general contour of the fins. The lower branch wrapped around the rear body corners and ran fully across the deck lid overhang. A silver anodized aluminum insert panel was standard and “Fury” in script was placed inside the dual moldings at the rear. Positioned directly behind the moldings were large, colorful “Forward Look” medallions. Standard equipment included all Fury features, plus swivel front seats, sport deck lid tire cover, custom padded steering wheel and the 260 HP 4-barrel 318 CID V-8 as standard equipment. The “Golden Commando” 361 CID V-8 with four-barrel carburetion and 305 horsepower was optional.

The Sport Fury was available as a two-door hardtop and Convertible only.
