1968 AMC Javelin Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1968 AMC Javelin Facts

The Javelin debuted on 22 August 1967, for the 1968 model year,[15] and the new models were offered for sale on 26 September 1967. American Motors marketed the Javelin as offering “comfortable packaging with more interior and luggage space than most of its rivals”.

The  front fascia had what AMC called a “Twin-Venturi” look with a recessed honeycomb grille and outboard-mounted headlamps,  with matching turn signals set into the bumper. The car incorporated several safety innovations, including interior windshield posts that were “the first industry use of fiberglass safety padding”, and the flush-mounted   door handles.  There were the mandated exterior side marker lights, and three-point seat belts and headrests for the front seats.

There were no side vent windows, and a flow-through ventilation extracted interior air through apertures in the doors controlled by adjustable flap valves at the door armrest bottom. All Javelins came with thin-shell bucket seats and a fully carpeted interior.  The Javelin’s instruments and controls were set deep in a padded panel in front of the driver, with the rest of the dashboard set well forward and away from the front passenger.

Available only in a two-door hardtop, body style, the Javelin came in base and SST models.  The SST model added appearance and comfort features, including reclining front seatbacks with upgraded upholstery, simulated wood-grained door panel trim, a sports-style steering wheel, and bright exterior trim for the drip rail and rocker panel.

The standard engine was a 232 CID I-6. Optional were a 290 CID V-8 with two-barrel carburetor, and a 343 CID V-8  two-barrel and  high-compression four-barrel version.  A three-speed “Shift-Command” automatic transmission was optional with a center console-mounted gear selector. Forward settings included “1”, “2”, and a “D” mode that was fully automatic, and the driver could choose to shift manually through all three gears.

Performance Options
The optional “Go Package” included the four-barrel carbureted 343 CID AMC V-8, power front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension, dual exhausts with chromed outlets, broad full-length body-side stripes, and E70x14 red-line tires mounted on chrome-plated “Magnum 500” styled road wheels.  In mid-1968, the new 315 HP  390 CID V-8 was offered as part of the “Go-package” option with a floor-mounted automatic or manual four-speed transmission.

American Motors supported the AMX and the Javelin muscle versions with a range of factory-approved “Group 19” dealer-installed performance accessories. These parts included, among others, dual four-barrel cross-ram intake manifold, high-performance camshaft kits, needle-bearing roller rocker arms, and dual-point ignition.

Historical
In its introductory year 55,124 Javelin models were sold, an impressive start considering the saturated nature of the Pony Car field at the time.

The AMC Javelin “Bonneville Speed Spectacular,” set a new C-Production class record of 161.733 mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats with Craig Breedlove at the wheel in 1968.

From the outset, AMC stressed performance in the Javelin line.  Not only did they attempt speed records, and support drag racing teams, but they made those speed parts available through a “Group 19”  (the section in their parts manual dedicated to these pieces) catalog. You can see the 50 page 1972 version of the Group 19 Performance Parts Brochure HERE.

Javelin –  Styling characteristics included a split grille with black-out treatment and form-fitting bumper, single. square headlamp housings integrated into fenders, round parking lamps integrated into bumper below the headlights,  and a semi-fastback roofline with wide, flat sail panels. The profile exhibited a “venturi” silhouette. A full-width rear bumper, horizontal, rectangular taillights and a black-out rear panel treatment characterized the rear. “Javelin” in chrome script was inserted in the left-hand grille insert and on the front fenders, behind the wheel opening and in the center of the deck latch panel.

Standard equipment included all regulation safety features, a Custom steering wheel, heater, Flo-Thru ventilation, paint stripes along upper belt line, front armrests, cigarette lighter, front ashtray, carpeting, bucket seats with front foam cushions, compartment lights, glove box lock, dual horns, wide profile tires and, for V-8s, a performance suspension with sway bar.

Javelin SST – The Javelin SST had all the above, plus reclining front bucket seats, wood-look Sports steering wheel and door panel trims, full wheel discs and moldings for the rocker panels, side windows and hood scoop. The Javelin went on sale Sept. 26. 1967 and by January a total of 12,390 had been sold. The company took the Javelin to Daytona Beach and other racetracks to show that it could really go. Later, the car showed promise in the new Trans-American racing series and, with full factory backing, narrowly missed unseating the championship Ford Mustang factory team.
