General Year Information – 1964 Buick Riviera
The 1963 Riviera was a huge sales success so Buick saw little need for major changes in 1964. A new, stand-up hood ornament and revised “Riviera” scripts on the front fenders and right-hand deck were the the most significant changes. The simulated rear fender cooling vents were still outlined in bright metal. The twin egg crate center grille continued without alteration, and “R” emblems replacing the Buick crests in the taillight lenses. (the “R” emblem, a trademark that would continue throughout the remainder of Riviera’s 36-year production run). A stylized letter “R” also appeared in wheel cover centers.
The interior was slightly changed by moving the heater controls from under the dashboard eyebrow to slide controls in the forward fairing of the center console. Leather was dropped as an option, and the Dynaflow twin-turbine transmission was replaced by a new three-speed Super Turbine 400, that was, in fact, the GM Turbo Hydra-Matic. It used a two-speed “D” and ‘L” selector, but could automatically downshift from third to second until the car reached a suitable speed to downshift to first. The standard engine was now the previously optional 340 HP 425 CID V-8. A 360 HP “Super Wildcat” version was optional, with dual Carter AFB four-barrel carburetors.
Total Production was 37,958 – another banner year.

The 1964 Riviera was changed little due to it huge success in its introductory year. Externally, only three things were noticeable – the now famous stylized “R” in the tail lights and the same “R” in the gun sight hood ornament. The the brightwork surrounding the faux side vents remained.
For 1964, two engines were available for the Riviera – the standard engine size was now 425 CID, and made 340 HP. The optional engine “Super Wildcat” was also 425 CID, but used two Carter AFB carburetors to deliver 360 HP. Both made the same rated torque of 445 ft. lbs. The 401 CID V8 was no longer available in the Riviera.
When designed, the Riviera was intended to have its headlights hidden in the front fender grilles. Unfortunately, the Corvette had a hidden headlight feature coming in the new 1963 model. After a big row started by Chevrolet, who claimed that this feature would be diminished by Riviera having the same feature, GM forced Buick to delay their headlights until 1965.
