1970 Dodge Dart – Focused on the Restyle and the Swinger
While Dodge Darts continued to use the same basic body as introduced in 1969, restyling of the front and rear made it look completely new. The styling was more rakish, with a grille that sloped forward at the top and was divided in the center. Unfortunately, the big block GT/GTS models were dropped with the only performance Dart the Swinger 340.

1970 Dodge Dart Facts and Specifications
General Year Information – 1970 Dodge Dart
The Dart was refreshed for 1970 with front and rear fascia changes that would give the car design themes closer to those found in Dodge’s full-size vehicles. At the rear, the Dart’s new rectangular tail lights were set into a wedge-shaped rear bumper design angled trailing toward the edge of the new deck lid and quarter panels. 14-inch wheels became standard equipment, and the 170 CID I-6 was replaced by a larger 198 CID allowing the use of the 225 CID I-6 tooling, while the 170 had used a different block. Part-throttle downshift was added to the V-8 automatic transmissions. 1970 Darts for the US and Canadian markets were built in Canada at the Windsor, Ontario, or Los Angeles, California assembly plants. All 1970 Darts got the federally mandated steering column and ignition lock.
The “Swinger” name was applied to all the Dart two-door hardtops except in the high-line Custom series. Other changes were made to the Dart line to avoid internal competition with Dodge’s new Challenger – the Dart convertible was discontinued along with the optional 383 CID V-8, with the 275 HP 340 CID 4-barrel V-8 as the top Dart engine. When the 340 was installed, the Dart became the “Swinger 340”. The “GT” model, with its optional 383 and 440 CID V-8 engine options, was retired. Also gone was the 273 CID V-8 formerly offered as the entry-level 8 cylinder powerplant.
Standard Dart models included a 4-door Sedan and a Swinger 2-door Hardtop. Both could be ordered with the 198 and 225 CID I-6 or a 3-18 CID V-8. The Swinger 340 was considered a separate line, and was a performance version of the standard Swinger with mandatory options. The Dart Custom was an upscale 2- and 4-door version of the standard model Dart, however, the 340 CID performance V-8 was unavailable in this line.
About the Swinger 340
The 1970 Swinger 340 came with functional hood scoops and “340” emblems. Swinger standard equipment included front disc brakes, heavy-duty “Rallye” suspension, a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio, fiberglass-belted bias-ply tires, and a bumblebee stripe. Optional equipment included an upgrade over the standard bench seat with all-vinyl bucket seats, and an optional center console. Other options included power-assisted brakes and steering. Rallye wheels and wire wheel covers were also optional, as was a 6,000 RPM tachometer. The Dart Swinger 340 was popular, with over 13 thousand produced, in spite of the introduction of the Challenger. The Swinger 340 was an excellent performing lower priced car and carried considerably lower insurance premiums than the big block Challenger and Charger, which helped boost sales.

In a bid to drive performance enthusiasts to the new Dodge Challenger, the 383 CID B block and the 440 CID RB block were dropped from the Dart lineup. The only performance engine available was the 340 CID 275 HP V-8.

While convertibles comprised a small portion of Dart sales, they did provide some panache to the line and had been offered ever since the body was redesigned in 1966. However, Dodge decided that their would be more desire for the new Challenger Convertible, so the model was retired in 1970.
