General Year Information – 1969 Pontiac
In 1969, the rest of the car’s styling was updated. The front fascia was similar to 1968, but the rest of the car saw changes. The creases on the side were removed and the overall “Coke Bottle” effect was lessened. The rear fascia had widened taillights and a color coded bumper insert. The interior received even more updates, with more padding, wood trim and a new dashboard.
The 1969 Full Size Pontiacs received restyling The front fascia was similar to 1968, but the rest of the car saw changes. The creases on the side were removed and the overall “Coke Bottle” effect was lessened. The rear fascia had widened taillights and a color coded bumper insert. The basic 1965 chassis, inner-body structure and four-door pillared sedan roof line were retained, but vent windows were dropped on all models. Safari wagons received a new two-way tailgate that could be opened to the side like a door or downward like a tailgate – similar to what was introduced by Ford Motor Company in 1966. In the Bonneville, the Brougham option was again available.
The Catalina/Ventura line saw a one-inch wheelbase increase to 122, but the Bonneville Line did not change. Headrests became standard on all ’69 Pontiacs built after January 1. All 1969 Pontiacs got a new locking steering column that would become a Federal requirement starting with the 1970 models. The Ventura trim package was offered for closed cars only. Variable-ratio power steering was a new option this year and front disc brakes were now automatically included when the power brake option was ordered.
Engine offerings across the line consisted of a standard 290 HP 400 CID two-barrel or a no-cost optional regular-fuel 265 HP 400 paired with the Turbo Hydramatic transmission, a 340 HP 400 CID four-barrel, a 360 HP 428 CID four-barrel replaced the 375 HP unit, or the 428 H.O. – still rated at 390 HP. The standard three-speed manual transmission and optional three-speed Turbo Hydramatic were continued as before, but the four-speed manual with Hurst shifter was no longer an available option.
Bonnevilles received the 360 HP 428 CID V-8 as standard with the 265 economy engine and the 428 H.O. as options. Catalina and Executive models used the 290 HP HP 400 CID engine as standard, and were offered the 340 HP 400 CID as well as the 360 and 390 HP 428 CID V-8s as an option.
NOTE: The Grand Prix received a new 118″ chassis this year and is now covered as a distinct model. It is can be found HERE.

John DeLorean was dissatisfied with how bloated and Bonneville-like the Grand Prix had become, so he ordered an approach. He wanted the car to move back to its roots of 1962 – but with a 70’s twist. The result was the all-new car, set on an expanded 118 inch A-Body (Tempest/GTO) chassis.
The former 375 HP 428 CID engine was dropped for the full size line, replaced with a 360 HP unit. The change was made by installing a series of tamer camshafts. A 370 HP 428 with specs similar to the older 375 HP unit was reserved for the Pontiac Grand Prix SJ model.

For 1969, Pontiac upgraded the interior trim on the Catalina convertible, making the Ventura trimmed version redundant, so it was quietly retired as an option.

The instrument panel was updated for all full size Pontiacs, offering a more driver-oriented layout, and taking cues from the new Grand Prix’s “Command Seat”.

The famous 8-lug optional wheels with integral brake drums were quietly dropped this year. Simple mag-style wheels that were available on the Tempest/GTO could be ordered.
