1969 Pontiac Grand Prix –
All New Chassis & Styling

The 1969 Grand Prix was ground-breaking in that it sought to deliver an image of performance that would be as attention-getting as its styling.  It rested on a new 118″ chassis derived from the A-Body Tempest/GTO. Engine options went from the 350 HP 400 CID V-8 and then up to a 370 and 390 HP 428 CID units. For the economy-minded, a 265 HP low compression 400 CID V-8 was on tap.

General Year Information – 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix

An all-new Grand Prix on an exclusive 118 inch platform derived from the A-Body Tempest/GTO was a new offering this year. The 1969 Grand Prix was ground-breaking in that it sought to deliver the images of performance that would be as attention-getting as its styling. Speaking of styling, the highlights were a V-shaped grille, square headlamp surrounds, and the longest hood of any production car offered at that time.

With the new car, Pontiac went after increased installations for manual transmissions and engine options from the 350 HP 400 CID V-8 and then up to a 370 and 390 HP 428 CID units, the last the fabled 428 HO. For the economy-minded, a 265 HP low compression 400 CID V-8 was on tap.

On the interior, the Grand Prix debuted a “Command Seat” wraparound cockpit-style instrument panel that placed most controls and gauges that slanted toward the driver and had controls within easy reach. Enhancing that interior’s sporty look, were “Strato” bucket seats that were separated by a console which integrated into the instrument panel and had a floor shifter, storage compartment, and ashtray. The seats could be had with a leather trim option which also replaced nylon loop rug with cut-pile carpeting. The usual “Morrokide” vinyl and also cloth upholstery were offerings as well.

Innovations in 1969 included a radio antenna embedded in the windshield, flush-mounted “pop-open” exterior door handles, side-impact beams inside the doors, and an optional built-in electrically heated rear window defogger mush like what we see today.

Standard equipment included dual exhaust, Strato Bucket seats, padded integral console with floor shift, hidden radio antenna, carpeted lower door panels, upper level ventilation system and “pulse” type recessed windshield wipers. There were two trim options, the SJ and the J, with the J Model being standard and receiving the 350 HP 400 CID V-8. The SJ was upscale and considered the performance version.

The SJ was separated from the J model with specific identification “SJ” emblems, with the following specific to it:

    • Engine: The SJ came with a 370 HP 428 CID V-8 (the J had a 350 HP 400 CID engine). The SJ was also available with the 390 HP “428 H.O.” V-8.
    • Transmission: The SJ was available with a 4-speed manual transmission whereas the J was not. (Certain J models received the 4-speed on Special Order).
    • Suspension: The SJ had an automatic leveling heavy duty suspension.
    • Instruments: The SJ had Rally gauges.
    • Tires: The SJ received G78-14 white-lined tires with G70 x 14 Optional.
    • Rear axle: The SJ had a heavy-duty 3.55:1 rear axle with manual transmission and 3.23:1 with automatic. The J came standard with a standard 3.23:1 axle – 2.93:1 in the Economy Engine.
    • Price: The base price with the optional “SJ” trim package was $4,182, a higher price than the Bonneville hardtop coupe.

Pontiac was determined to stress performance in the new Grand Prix, reverting to the theme of 1962-63. Exclusive to the SJ Model was the 428 CID V-8. It was available in the 370 or 390 HP versions, with the 370 HP unit exclusive to Grand Prix.


The “Command Seat” wraparound cockpit-style instrument panel dominates the interior. It had most controls and gauges slanted toward the driver with controls within easy reach. The “Strato” bucket seats  were separated by a console which was integrated into the instrument panel.

Grand Prix Series 276 –  The all-new Grand Prix on an exclusive 118 Inch platform was a popular offering this year. Styling highlights were a V-shaped grille. square headlamp surrounds, an aircraft inspired interior and the longest hood of any production car in history. Standard equipment included dual exhaust, Strato Bucket seats, padded integral console with floor shift, hidden radio antenna, carpeted lower door panels, upper level ventilation system and ·pulse’ type recessed windshield wipers. . A 350 horsepower V-8 was standard.

NOTE: The 4-speed manual transmission was intended to be exclusive to the SJ model, but there were a few J model cars that were special ordered with this unit.

SJ Option  –  The SJ  was an option, not listed as a distinct model. The ‘SJ’ option package was available that contained special badging, performance suspension, available 4-speed transmission option, and a choice of two 428 CID V-8s – 370 and 390 HP.

NOTE: The 4-speed manual transmission was intended to be exclusive to the SJ model.
