1969 Dodge Dart Facts and Specifications

General Year Information – 1969 Dodge Dart

In 1969 the 2-door sedan was dropped at the end of 1968 and replaced with the “Swinger” model 2-door hardtop – available in Custom, GT, and GTS trim. Also added was the Swinger 340. At the top of the Dart performance engines for 1969, the 440 CID V-8 was made available in the Dart GTS. The Dart 270 nameplate was replaced by the “Dart Custom”, but was otherwise the same model.

The entire 1969 Dart range received trim updates including another minor revision of the grille with a return to rectangular park/turn lights. The round side marker lights of 1968 were replaced with rectangular versions. Head restraints were optional equipment until January 1, 1969, when their installation was mandatory. The 6-cylinder models received a carburetor anti-ice system borrowed from Canadian-market Chrysler 6-cylinder engines, and the drum brake automatic adjusters were revised for more consistent operation.

Dart Swinger 340
The Dart “Swinger 340” with its light weight and the 340 COD performance V-8 proved to be very popular with many performance enthusiast. While it lacked some conventional creature comforts, such as carpeting and no bucket seats – what 340s lacked in luxuries, the light weight combined with the lively 275 HP engine resulted in more than lively performance. See the Test of the 1969 Dart Swinger 340 HERE.

440 CID Engine Added
Rather than offering the 426 CID “Hemi” V-8 as the top dog performance engine as was available in the mid-size Dodges, Chrysler decided to install the 440 CID “RB” wedge powerplant, rated at 375 HP.  Surprisingly, many were ordered by customers. Larry Shepard, Chrysler staff engineer, said: “In 1969, we built over 600 440-powered Darts – basically the same as the 383 GTS, except for the engine.”

Historical Notes
Even with the addition of the Dart Swinger, sales dropped by about 40,000 units.

The Dart Swinger was the replacement of the base Dart 2-door coupe. While it remained as a no frills model with a spartan interior (bench seat and rubber floor mat instead of carpeting), when combined with the underrated 340 CID 275 HP V-8 a true budget muscle car was created. 20,000 Swinger 340s were sold.

In a surprise move, Dodge decided to offer the 375 HP RB V-8 in the Dart. Coded E86, this was an unaltered 440 HP engine found in the mid-size Dodge in 1967-69. The option was purely a response to the escalating “muscle car wars”.  The combo resulted in a beast to drive on the street, especially because power steering was not fitted due to space limitations.
