General Year Information – 1969 Plymouth Barracuda
In 1969, Plymouth placed an increased emphasis on performance. The “’Cuda 340” was the new, high-performance model was offered in the Barracuda line, with either fastback or hardtop styling. These styles, plus the convertible, also came as regular Barracudas. The ‘Cuda line of option-created-models included four-speed manual transmission; sport tires; heavy duty suspension and brakes. The hardtop was available with an optional yellow flowered roof called the “Mod Top”, a vinyl roof covering with a floral motif, also including the same pattern as insets in the seats as well – it would be available in 1969 and 1970. Plymouth sold the Mod Top as a package.
The 1969 version of the 383 engine was upgraded to increase power output to 330 HP and a new trim package called ‘Cuda, was released. The ‘Cuda, which was based on the Formula S option, was available with either the 340, 383 and, new for 1969, the 440 CID Super Commando V8. The big block still lacked power steering due to supposed “fitment issues”.
