General Year Information – 1965 Ford Fairlane
The 1965 Fairlane had its first total restyling of the line since its introduction in 1962. The car featured new sheet metal below the belt line for a new front, rear and side look. The overall length and width were increased as well. The front end featured a wide horizontal grille and horizontal dual head lights. The hood incorporated a small peak in the center that swept forward over the leading edge and met a similar accent line in the grille. The overall profile was also changed with a higher fender line that carried farther back, for a more massive look. For the first time since introduction, Fairlane taillights were not round, but rectangular and were accented with chrome “cross-hair” accents across the lens face. The optional backup lights were mounted in the center of the lens.
The 1965 Fairlane ranges consisted of base Fairlane and Fairlane 500 two-door coupes and four-door sedans, and the Fairlane 500 and 500 Sports Coupe two-door hardtops. The Sports Coupe got its own standard “spinner” wheel covers and extra exterior brightwork. The Fairlane Squire wagon was dropped, but the standard station wagon was continued.
On the powertrain side, the “K-code” 271 HP 289 CID V-8 continued along with the 200 HP 2-barrel and the 225 HP 4-barrel versions. The I-6 remained at 200 CID. The three-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission was available across the entire engine line. All 1965 models featured 14-inch wheels as standard.

This would be the last year the famous Hi-Po 289 CID V-8 would be offered in the Ford Fairlane. (It would continue on through 1967 in the Mustang). Interestingly, in this year it could be mated to the 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission.

For unknown reasons, the upscale Country Squire wagon disappeared, replaced by the Ranch Wagon as the only Fairlane offering. Rumor has it that the faux wood side paneling looked atrocious in previewing sessions, so it was dropped. There was a slightly upgraded interior in the 500 Series wagon, however.

Fairlane – The Fairlane was the base trim level for the line and included chrome windshield and rear window moldings, chrome horn ring, front and rear arm rests, cigarette lighter, vinyl coated rubber floor mats, and the Fair lane name in block letters at the front of the front fenders.
Fairlane 500 – The Fairlane 500 models were the top trim level of the line, and included chrome window moldings, a chrome horn ring, front and rear arm rest, a Ford crest on the roof “C” pillar, a chrome hood ornament, a single horizontal chrome strip with an aluminum insert, Ford, in block letters across the rear escutcheon panel, with two chrome strips between the taillights and a Ford crest in the center of the panel. The Fairlane 500 models also used carpet instead of the vinyl floor mats found in Fairlane models.
