1966-1970 Chrysler Corporation “B” and “RB” V-8s

The Ultimate B/RB Block – the Famous Hemi. “Beat It” was one of Chrysler’s advertising themes in 1968.

PART TWO – The maturity of the Chrysler big block V-8 from 1966 through 1970

Introduction

History

The Chrysler B and RB engines are a series of big-block V-8s introduced in 1958 to replace the Corporation’s first generation of Poly and Hemi engines. The B and RB engines are often referred to as “wedge” engines because they use wedge-shaped combustion chambers. Of course they were a bit different from Chrysler’s 426 Hemi big block engine, but even that powerplant was based on the B/RB design even with its hemispherical shaped combustion chambers.

Back in 1958, the corporation sought more compact and lighter replacements for its earlier engines, for the most part due to the complexity and manufacturing costs of the early designs, but also to remove the plethora of engines – designed and built by each division. The “B” and “RB” block was used across the board and built in consolidated plants.

Design features of the B and RB engines include 17 bolts per cylinder head, a cylinder block that extends 3 inches below the crankshaft centerline, an intake manifold not exposed to crankcase oil on the underside, stamped-steel shaft-mounted rocker arms, and a front-mounted external oil pump driven by the camshaft.

The Hemi only differentiated in two areas – the cylinder heads, of course, and in the reinforced lower end to handle the work of a racing engine. NOTE: The race Hemi is not covered here as its specialized construction requires a separate and future article.

B Series V-8s. The ‘B’ series wedge engine was introduced in 1958 with 350 CID and 361 CID versions. The 361 would continue in production until the end of the series, albeit only for truck installation. In 1959, a 383 CID version of the B block was introduced, It would stay in production until 1971, when it was replaced by an over-bored version displacing 400 CID. That version would remain in production until 1978.

RB Series V-8s. The RB wedge, produced from 1959 to 1979, were raised-block (taller deck height to allow a longer stroke) versions of the B engine. All RB engines have a 3.75 inch stroke, with the bore being the factor in the engine’s size. All RB wedge engines have a deck height of 10.725 inches, and were fitted with 6.768 inch long connecting rods, resulting in a 1.80:1 rod ratio. Bore center distance is 4.8 inches.

The One-off 383 CID RB block. Not to be confused with the 383 B engine, the 383 RB had a 4.03125 inch bore combined with the RB’s long stroke of 3.75 inch, for a displacement of 382.9 CID. It was only available in 1959 and 1960 on the US-built Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga models; as one of the Trenton Engine’s lines had been converted to the new RB engine (to make the 413), and demand for the 383 B engine was too high for the remaining line. The solution was to create a 383 RB to fill the gap.

The last engine of this design was produced in August 1978, ending the era of Chrysler B and RB engines.

Please see each tab section for a breakdown of the available variants of the engine over time.

1966 Big Block Line Up

For 1966, the engine line up still consisted of some of the older “B” Series engines and the addition of the famous “Street Hemi. The Valiant/Barracuda line still was bereft of the B/RB Series, but the mid-size line now had engines from 361 to 440 CID and the426 CID Hemi. The venerable 426-S street performance engine was replaced with the 440 CID.  Full Size cars had the same choices, less the 361 CID “B” Series and the Hemi, but were also fitted with the 440 CID Wedge.
