Ford Mustang –
Stay the Course for 1968
The styling of the 1968 Mustang continued the look introduced in the previous year. The 302 CID V-8 bowed, and in April, the Cobra Jet 428 CID V-8 would be introduced, becoming one of Ford’s coveted powerplants of the period.
General Year Information – 1968 Ford Mustang
The 1968 Ford Mustang was introduced in September 1967. The 1968 Mustang continued to use the same body shell introduced the previous year, with minor trim changes. The Mustang emblem appeared to float in the center of the grille, with no horizontal or vertical bars attached to the emblem. Also, the side scoop had much cleaner chrome trim than the previous year, with no horizontal stripes connected to it. Side marker lights and other new federally mandated safety features were required on all Mustangs built this year.
The 427-powered Mustang was capable of moving from 0-60 mph in around six seconds. The price for this motor was $775 above that of the base Mustang V-8. The 427 was available early in the year, but rarely installed, as the Cobra Jet could match it and cost $500 less. 428 CJ V-8s were installed in 2,854 Mustangs in this model year.
Historical Notes
Ford went through a 60-day strike from late September to late November, 1967. This had a negative effect on sales and production. Model year production peaked at 317,148 units.

In 1968 Ford embarked on a program to create a 428-powered Mustang. The result came out in April 1968 as the “428 Cobra Jet”. A 428 CID police interceptor short-block was topped with 427 CID “low-riser” cylinder heads, and a Holley 735-cfm four-barrel, on an iron intake rather than the aluminum police interceptor casting. The Cobra Jet used the same hydraulic camshaft as the 390 GT engine. Ford underrated its new 428 CJ engine at 335 hp – only 10 more than the 390 it was replacing. See a test of the Cobra Jet HERE.
A very collectible model-option produced this year was the highly sought after “California Special” a variant of the coupe with special features like Shelby-type taillights. There was also the “High-Country Special,” a similar regional edition model, produced for the Colorado Sales Zone. See some photos of these models HERE.
