The Ford FE Series V-8

The Ford “FE” (Ford-Edsel) big block was in continuous use in cars and trucks from 1958 through 1976. It spawned major performance engines: 352 CID 360 HP, 390 CID 401 HP, 406 CID 405 HP, 427 CID 425 HP and the famous SOHC 427 CID 650 HP NASCAR engine shown here.

All About The Ford FE Engine
1958 – 1976

The Ford “FE” engine got its nomenclature from the realignment of the Divisions at Ford for 1958. “FE” stands for “Ford-Edsel” which were the vehicles where it was intended to be used. The truck version was revered to as the “FT” engine. The huge V-8 that was developed for Lincoln was an entirely different design and was set at 383-410-430 CID (and later 462 CID) and called the “MEL” block. It was used in Edsel Citation, Mercury, and Lincoln lines.

The Ford FE engine has conventional wedge combustion chambers in the head whereas the MEL has the chamber in the block due to the block being cut 10 degrees off square with the bore axis, rather than the standard 90 degree cut.

Ford had recognized, like other makers, that cars were growing in size, and that larger powerplants would be required to move them as well as their successors. The “Y Block”, introduced in 1954, was designed to only grow to a bit over 300 CID, but no further, and in fact had reached its limitations at 312 CID by 1956. A significant modification would have been needed to grow the engine beyond 312, and as such, Ford decided to use a clean sheet of paper. The FE V-8 was the result.

Some unique features of the Ford FE engine were the distributor located at the front of the engine to ease maintenance, and cylinder heads that were very narrow requiring the intake manifold to be part of the valve cover area, with the pushrods reaching the rocker arms through it, rather than the head. The intake also acted as the valley cover – at that time a newer idea. The cylinder heads had large ports and the valve sizes were large for an engine of its original size at 2.02″ for the intake and 1.56″ for the exhaust.

The Ford FE engine and and its truck counterpart, the FT V-8s are “deep skirt” designs—so-called because the cylinder block casting extends below the crankshaft centerline, giving great rigidity and support to the crankshaft’s bearings. In these engines, the casting extends 3.625 in (92.1 mm) below the crankshaft centerline, which is more than an inch below the bottom of the crank journals. Later, this would allow for “cross-bolting” the main bearing caps for added rigidity necessary for long distance racing.

All Ford FE engines have a bore spacing (distance between each cylinder center) of 4.630″, and a deck height (the distance from crank center to top of block) of 10.170″. The main crankshaft journal bearing diameter is 2.749″.

Originally the blocks were cast as a “top oilier”, meaning the oil was sent to a line above the camshaft first. This was to ensure that the lifters received enough oil to keep them quiet. Ford would learn that this inhibited oiling at high RPM and would result in the famous 427 CID “side oilier, that oiled the bearings first.

Mature FE V-8s: 1961-1965

The period of 1961 through 1965 was an age of maturity for the FE. The engine size went from 352 CID to 428 CID. Horsepower went from 220 to 425. Racing improved the efficiency and durability of the engine, which proved to be very durable, especially when fitted with cross-bolted main bearings and side oiling, that fed the main bearings first.

In most cases, all FE engines were available in the Mercury Line concurrently and in the same models as Ford cars. Two exceptions were FE engines unique to Mercury:

  • 361 CID (though available on special order as a “police” variant in 1959-59.
  • 410 CID – exclusive to the Mercury Monterey line in 1966-1967.

We endeavor to deliver as accurate specifications as possible from multiple sources, however, when conflicts occur, we revert to the AMA specifications sheets submitted by Ford Engineering to the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AMA).
