1963 Corvette Facts, Figures, and Specifications
1963 Corvette – All New Everywhere
For 1963, the Corvette received a complete and total restyle in 1963. The chassis was also all new – including independent rear suspension! This would be considered a new series (later called “C2”). Although the rear deck treatment on the 1963 Corvette resembled the 1962 version, the rest of the car was totally new. For the first time, a closed fastback coupe was also offered. The only holdover from 1962 was the engine lineup.

General Year Information – 1963 Corvette Facts
The Corvette received a complete restyle in 1963. Also, the chassis was changed from a “live” rear axle to independent suspension. Although the rear deck treatment resembled that of the 1962 model, the rest of the car was totally new.
Quad headlamps were retained but hidden behind rotating doors – the first American car so equipped since the 1942 DeSoto. The headlamps were mounted in rotating housings that blended with the sharp-edged front end when “closed”. Hidden headlamps would be a feature of the Corvette until the C6 model debuted in 2005. Coupe doors were cut into the roof, which made entry/exit easier in such a low-slung closed car. Faux vents were located in the hood and on the coupe’s rear pillars; functional ones had been intended but were cancelled due to cost considerations.
The Sting Ray’s interior carried a re-interpretation of the twin-cowl Corvette dash motif used since 1958, but a more practical one incorporating a roomy glove box, an improved heater, and the cowl-ventilation system. A full set of round gauges included a huge speedometer and tachometer. The control tower center console returned, somewhat slimmer but containing the clock and a vertically situated radio. Luggage space was improved as well, although due to the lack of an external trunk lid, cargo had to be loaded behind the seats. The spare tire was located at the rear in a drop-down fiberglass housing beneath the gas tank. The large round deck emblem was hinged as a fuel-filler flap.
Corvette Production almost doubled this year, with over 20 thousand made. 83.5 percent of all Corvettes came with four-speed manual transmission. A Fuel Injected Corvette could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.9 seconds; from 0 to 100 miles per hour in 16.5 seconds. A rare option in 1963 Corvettes is air conditioning. Only 1.3 percent of the cars were so-equipped.

Maneuverability was improved thanks to the faster recirculating ball steering & a shorter wheelbase. Less weight on the front wheels also meant easier steering. With 80 plus pounds on the rear wheels, improved traction occurred. Stopping power improved with 11.0″ drum brakes that were now wider. Power assist was available with all brake packages. See The 1963 Corvette Brochure HERE.

For the first time ever was performance equipment package RPO Z06, for $1,818.45. They were known as “Big Tanks” because the package had a 36.5-US-gallon gas tank versus the standard 20-gallon unit. The package was only available on coupes because the oversized tank would not fit in the convertible. See The 1963 Corvette AMA Specifications Sheet HERE.

The 1963 Corvette coupe sported a fastback body with a long hood and a raised windsplit that ran the length of the roof and continued down the back on a pillar that bisected the rear window. The split backlite is attributed to Mitchell, who claimed to have been inspired by the 57SC Bugatti “Atlantique” coupe. However, the feature actually predated both the C2 Corvette, having been used by Harley Earl on both his Oldsmobile Golden Rocket show car. Earl’s inspiration was said to have been an Alfa-Romeo coupe with a body by Scaglione shown at the 1954 Turin Auto Show.
The Convertible had all the styling attributes of the Coupe, however, it borrowed the rear deck and fascia from the 1961-62 convertible. The folding top was hidden as before and was electronically operated.
